Jamie Carragher marked his big day with a goal for each side as his Liverpool team rolled back the years in beating an Everton XI in his testimonial at Anfield.

The 32-year-old defender scored from the spot in the first half for the Reds before converting a penalty own-goal for the club he supported as a boy after the break.

Jamie Carragher Explains Row With Alvaro Arbeloa

The Reds defender has revealed why he clashed with his team-mate at the Hawthorns today...

Liverpool ensured West Bromwich Albion's relegation from the Premier League today, with a 2-0 victory in the Black Country that was marked by an on-field disagreement between Jamie Carragher and Alvaro Arbeloa.

Carragher revealed after the match that the motivation behind the row had been the team's determination to ensure that goalkeeper Pepe Reina won the Golden Glove award for the keeper with the highest number of clean sheets.

"We can't win the league now but there are a number of targets we can aim for," he told Liverpool's official website.

"We want to keep a clean sheet and we want Pepe to have a chance of the Golden Glove for the third season running. Pepe is one behind Van der Sar now and there's a chance Van der Sar won't play next week, so we wanted to make sure he got a clean sheet today.

"To be honest we were a bit lackadaisical in our defending all through the game and they had too many chances.

"Maybe we took it a bit too easy and let them attack us too much, but that was one of the toughest games I've played in all season. We go all over Europe playing top teams and we play against the best sides in this country, but that was one of the hardest games we've had."

Carragher is hoping to end the club's title drought next season, even though it is his belief that the challenge is stiffened by the ultra-high-quality sides competing in England.

"It's hard to win the Premier League because our top four sides plus Barcelona probably make up the best five sides in Europe. That's the challenge we face," he explained.

"You can look at the statistics from this season and it's impressive that we've only lost two games and scored lots of goals, but United have got more points than us and credit to them because that's what matters.

"We have to make sure we finish second now and win our last game of the season next weekend."

Liverpool welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Anfield in their concluding fixture of the campaign next weekend.

Jamie Carragher Positive Liverpool Can Overtake Manchester United

The Reds defender has responded in a defiant manner to the challenge issued earlier from the other end of the East Lancs Road.

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher seems to agree with the manager of Manchester United, Alex Ferguson, in thinking that the only serious rivals to United's title bid this season are the men from Merseyside.

Ferguson had earlier opined that he felt Liverpool were the only serious threat to the Red Devils as Chelsea had now slipped too far behind and Aston Villa were still something of an unknown quantity.

Carragher concurs with the Scot to an extent, but differs in that he sees Liverpool as favourites for the crown, but he isn't letting such thoughts obscure his focus.

"There are still a lot of games to go, so it's important everyone at the club remains calm," the former England defender told Liverpool's official website today.

"A lot of people said at the start of the season that we needed to be in the title race at the end and at least be in with a fighting chance.

"We finished fourth last season, but we have overtaken Chelsea and Arsenal and even though everyone at the club understands that it's not over yet by a long way, at the moment it looks like it is going to be us and Manchester United for the title."

The 31-year-old also feels that simply by overhauling Chelsea and Arsenal this season, the Reds have taken a massive step forward.

"Just by overtaking Chelsea and Arsenal in the challenge is an achievement in itself already so everyone should be proud of that," he added.

"Now hopefully we can go one step further and win this title."

With the game between the two teams on March 14 fast approaching, Carragher thinks that the Merseysiders have at least one key advantage going into the run-in: Fernando Torres.

"United have got a bit of a lead on us at the moment but if we can close that gap before we go to Old Trafford next month, that would put us in a great position - especially if we are in form at the time of that game," the Liverpool stalwart continued.

"Fernando has been scoring goals recently, but if we can get him back firing like he did at the end of last season it’s going to be a massive boost for us.

"Fernando is the best striker in the Premier League, if not the world, so to be where we are already after playing so much of the season without him is a great credit to the lads, staff and management.

"It would be interesting to see how other teams would cope with having such an important player on the sidelines for so long."

Carragher welcomes 'mind games'

Jamie Carragher believes the fact that Liverpool are involved in the latest 'mind games' proves they are genuine title contenders.Reds boss Rafael Benitez fired the first shot at rival manager Sir Alex Ferguson recently, sparking an early war of words amongst the two.

But Carragher insists the 'mind games' merely represent Liverpool's progression as contenders.

"Being involved in the mind games is a good thing. We've always been on the outside looking in, something we're not proud of.

"I've always had respect for them (Manchester United). They're a proper club, like us, and they should have respect for us as well" stressed the reds defender.

Liverpool have not won a League title since 1990 as United look to equal their record of 18 League titles this season.

Despite only losing one league game this season, Liverpool's five home draws have cost them the lead at the top of the table, prompting Ferguson to suggest they are nervous.

"Will we get nervous? I haven't got a clue" replied Carragher.

"I'm not going to put an act on and say no, because I've never been there. It's only January. It's embarrassing, really, that I've only been in this position once, with Gerard Houllier".
