Reds on song against Singapore

Liverpool secured their first victory of pre-season thanks to a 5-0 thrashing of Singapore at the National Stadium, with Xabi Alonso appearing as a second-half substitute despite continuing speculation regarding a possible move to Real Madrid.

With captain Steven Gerrard absent following his court appearance this week, and reports still hinting at possible departures for both Alonso and Javier Mascherano, Rafa Benitez will have been pleased to secure a convincing victory with Andrej Voronin opening the scoring in first-half injury time.

Liverpool completely dominated after the break and, after Albert Riera added the second goal, Dirk Kuyt took centre stage when selflessly claiming assists for three goals, teeing up Krisztian Nemeth twice and Fernando Torres once.

One of the biggest cheers of the night was reserved for Alonso though as he appeared as a substitute with 12 minutes remaining, the large contingent of Liverpool fans imploring the midfielder to resist the lure of the Bernabeu.

Despite the presence of a huge number of Reds supporters, and a warm reception prior to kick-off that saw 'You'll Never Walk Alone' played to an appreciative audience, any pretence of a friendly encounter was quickly abandoned when Aleksandar Duric flattened Mascherano with an unnecessary shoulder-barge.

Chances were few and far between in a largely uneventful first half, however, with Ryan Babel testing Hassan Sunny in the Singapore goal when connecting with David Ngog's cross after only seven minutes.

The two forwards were dovetailing neatly at times, but Liverpool failed to turn their superior possession into any clear openings as they tended to over-elaborate.

That changed in first-half injury time when Voronin took aim from just outside the box and saw his shot take a deflection to fly past the off-balance Sunny and into the net.

Riera was one of three players introduced at half-time by Rafa Benitez and the winger required just five minutes to make an impact on the game as he controlled a Mascherano pass with his chest and finished with ease.

The changes kept on coming, and substitutes Kuyt and Nemeth combined to put Liverpool 3-0 in front after 73 minutes. The Dutchman took advantage of some sloppy play from the hosts to charge down the right and tee up his young team-mate for an easy finish.

Kuyt was the creator once more after 80 minutes as he found space down the right wing and picked out Torres to leave the Spaniard with a routine finish from five yards out.

Just three minutes later, and following a clever piece of work from Dani Pacheco, Kuyt claimed his third assist when finding Nemeth, the striker scoring with a fine header from ten yards out.

It was a fine cameo performance from the Dutch forward as he helped orchestrate a dominant victory for Benitez's Reds, but Liverpool fans will be hoping that their brief glimpse of leading man Xabi Alonso is not one of their last.

Football: Amri marks return with superb double

Reports by ERIC SAMUEL

KUALA LUMPUR: Mohd Amri Yahyah could not have asked for a more memorable return to international football after scoring twice in the 2-3 friendly against English Premier League giants Manchester United at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

The 28-year-old, back in action after a three-year absence, will go down in Malaysian football history as the first player from the national team to score against the Red Devils.

His first was a real cracker, volleying the ball from a distant past United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar in stoppage time in the first-half.

His second came courtesy of a mistake by United’s second choice goalkeeper Ben Foster, who lost his footing in trying to retrieve a back pass from Darren Gibson. This allowed Amri to beat the keeper to the ball.

“This is one of my greatest moments ... I will surely treasure it. To score not one but two goals against one of the top clubs in the world is simply amazing,” said Amri after the game.

For his first goal, Amri said it was down to studying Van der Sar’s game.

“He likes to come off his line and, when I had the opportunity, I took a swipe at goal and to my surprise it sailed into the back of the net,” said Amri, who was grateful for the slip-up by Foster for his second goal.

“The moment he (Foster) tripped, I sensed an opening and I burst past him and he was slow to react. It was an easy goal,” said Amri, who thanked national coach K. Rajagopal for giving him the break by calling him up after a three-year lapse.

Amri has been going great guns with Selangor, having led the state team to victory in the Charity Shield and the FA Cup. Selangor are also two matches away from wrapping up the Super League crown.

Here's what I think so funny, just dont take it seriously...

After a cracking games against Man Utd, one name singing at lips of every Malaysian as selangor born Yahyah, Amri are reported transfer target for the former European Champion as possible reliable and most definite replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

A fees worth RM50K are seen enough to tempt the Selangor's player to seek pasture new at Old Trafford. Man Utd's representative are seen going to Tanjung Karang to finalise the deals. A cracking volley from 35yards are been compared to ones scored by Ronaldo "I'm already at Madrid" at Estadio do Dragao and the 2nd that even Tevez"Bye bye Fergie, Ai Ai City" will approved as persistant and industrious desire to score goals.

Further news will follows....

Hahahahaha...

Fernando Torres Can Outscore Michael Owen – Robbie Fowler

Put your money on 'El Nino' bagging more goals than United's new no. 7, says the former Reds goal ace...

Former Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has admitted he is hoping Fernando Torres can outscore Michael Owen in next season’s Premier League.

Owen will line up for Liverpool’s bitter rivals Manchester United next season and whilst Fowler said that he wishes him well, he added that he was hoping Torres does even better.

“I’m surprised Michael has gone to United but he’s a very good player and I hope he does well,” Fowler told the Daily Star.

“But, if he scores a lot of goals, I hope Torres scores even more.

“It’s a bit of a sticky situation for us, with Michael going there, as I don’t want United to do well.”

Fowler, who now plys his trade in Australia with North Queensland Fury, also tipped Liverpool to claim Premier League glory this time around.

“Rafael Benitez is a very good manager and he’ll be looking to put right a few wrongs last season,” added Fowler.

“The way Liverpool finished the league last season was brilliant but unfortunately, United’s finish was similar.

“But I have been saying for some time now, that this will be Liverpool’s season – they will win the league.”

In this updated release of his best selling official book, Gerrard gives his personal views on captaincy, what the role involves on and off the pitch and much more.

Our dynamic number eight also talks about Jamie Carragher's role as a vice captain and friend and talks about other captains who have influenced him.

Steven Gerrard My Captain's Book is available now in paperback for £9.99. Telephone 0845 143 0001 or order online from www.gerrardmycaptainsbook.co.uk.

Speaking about the book, Gerrard said: "This is the story so far of what it's been like having the massive honour of wearing the captain's armband for the club I've loved all my life.

"There is still a lot to achieve for me personally, for Liverpool and England, so hopefully 2009-10 is going to be a lot bigger for me trophy-wise."

Liverpool Complete Kit 09/10

Reina in Yellow

Liverpool Team Of The Decade 2000-2010

The '00s has been a period of ups, downs, and transition for Liverpool. It kicked off with a bang as the Reds claimed a unique treble (League Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Cup) in 2001, but trophies would prove hard to come by for the remainder of Gerard Houllier's reign.

Rafael Benitez took over in the summer of 2004, and the rebuilding phase got underway in the most remarkable fashion - glory in that famous Champions League final in Istanbul rather overshadowed the fifth-place league finish.

The Reds are now back amongst Europe's elite and pushing for silverware on a regular basis. Plenty of players have come and gone in that time, but which have had the most lasting (and positive) impact?

Pepe Reina (2005-)

Benitez hailed Pepe as the best goalkeeper in Spain when he plucked him from Villarreal. Some scoffed, but since his arrival at Anfield, the Barcelona product has firmly established himself as one of the world's finest shot-stoppers. Noted for his sweeping and distribution skills, Reina is easily the best 'Pool have had between the sticks since Bruce Grobbelaar.

Steve Finnan (2003-2008)

Brought from Fulham by Houllier, the Irishman struggled somewhat during his early days at the club. However, he survived the Benitez cull and saw off competition from several continental recruits to become arguably the most consistent right-back in England.

Jamie Carragher (1996-)

In the Benitez era, 'Carra' has evolved from a handy utility into a central defender of immense quality. Uncompromising and hugely passionate, the Bootle boy is a proper leader and the commander of one of the most reliable defensive lines in Europe.

Sami Hyypia (1999-2009)

Pound for pound, the big Finn must be one of Liverpool's all-time best buys - just over £2 million for a Kop legend is pretty decent value. Now at Bayern Leverkusen after a glorious decade at Anfield, Hyypia ranks among the greatest centre-halves to have played in the Premier League.

John Arne Riise (2001-2008)

His last years at Liverpool were not his finest, but that should not detract from the contribution he made in seasons prior. Boasting an explosive left foot, the Norwegian defender produced some of the most memorable strikes in the Reds' recent history. A clear standout for the left-back slot.

Dietmar Hamann (1999-2006)

He looks like an economics professor and drinks like a sailor on shore leave (if Jamie Carragher is to be believed), but 'Didi' is as tough and focused as they come when there is a game of football to be played. An absolute favourite with the Kop, and was instrumental in the 2005 Champions League win.

Xabi Alonso (2004-)

Alonso's arrival signalled the beginning of the 'Rafalution'. Although not the quickest around (indeed, he and Hamann were an almost torturously adynamic pairing at times), his technical qualities and unrivalled passing range have been making Kopites smile for the past five years.

Steven Gerrard (1998-)

No explanation needed. Life-long Liverpudlian, arch-captain, and the driving force behind an ever-improving team. One of those rare players who can win games (and trophies) off his own boot. Versatile to a fault, 'Stevie G' is the heart of the Liverpool Football Club.

Gary McAllister (2000-2002)

Houllier described 'Gary Mac' as his most inspirational signing - and he's probably right. Eyebrows were raised when he arrived at age 35 on a free transfer, but the Scot brought some much needed wisdom and creativity to a team that had previously lacked leadership and direction. A key member of the 2000-01 treble triumph.

Michael Owen (1996-2004)

He grew up an Evertonian (in Wales), left for Real Madrid in controversial circumstances, and now he's a Manc - safe to say, he's not the most popular ex-Red. Betrayal aside, nobody can dispute his record whilst at Anfield - he just scored goals, no matter who he was playing alongside or against.

[p/s: naaah.... knowing owen.. im not surprised he accepted fergie offer.
he want to revive his career back.. and MU give him opportunities. a big gamble for fergie.. for injury prone owen. Deep inside.. hate to see him wear devil's jersey. But life is about moving on. i do think he is making a right move. Even he will be hated I love seeing rafa not choosing signing him before. we deserve better than player than him.. ]

Fernando Torres (2007-)

He's not been on Merseyside long, but 'El Nino' is already well on the way to becoming an all-time great. The Spaniard filled a gaping void that had existed since Owen's departure, and he could be the key in Liverpool's bid to break their title drought.

We are diving into the sea of delinquents

What is going on with our generation???

GLEN IS READY NOW

Rafa Benitez believes Glen Johnson now has the quality and experience to be a star player at a top four club.

The 24-year-old won a title winner's medal at Chelsea earlier in his career before being sold to Portsmouth.

Johnson's time at Fratton Park saw him become England's first-choice right back - and Benitez believes he is now ready to succeed in a side gunning for major honours.

"We are really pleased because we've signed a really good player, an England international," the boss told reporters at Johnson's unveiling on Thursday.

"It's very positive. He has quality and a very good mentality, and from the first time I spoke with him it was clear he wanted to come here.

"He has quality, that's clear. He's more mature - you can see from the press conference he is good.

"Chelsea were trying to win big trophies at the time he was there and they needed experience in order to win. Now it is a good moment because he is a much better player, he has the experience and the desire."

Meanwhile, Benitez confirmed Fabio Aurelio will be out for a maximum of two months with a knee injury sustained over the summer, though the boss is hopeful of having the left-back available within a month.
