Hull City vs Liverpool Highlights

Liverpool stay in hunt after win at Hull

Liverpool saw off a spirited performance from 10-man Hull City to win 3-1 at the KC Stadium and keep alive their hopes of wresting the Premier League title off Manchester United.

Despite an encouraging first-half performance from Hull, Xabi Alonso broke the deadlock just before the half-time whistle with a well-struck shot from 25 yards.

The hosts struggled to recover from the blow and when Caleb Folan was dismissed for a petulant kick at Martin Skrtel on 59 minutes, their hopes of getting something from the game effectively evaporated.

Dirk Kuyt hammered home Liverpool's advantage to make it 2-0 four minutes later and, despite Geovanni's 73rd minute strike which briefly gave the home fans hope, Kuyt bagged his own second and the Reds' third at the death to seal a vital win.

Nothing but all three points would have been enough for Liverpool in their chase for the title, and victory saw them once again move ahead of United at the top of the table, although the champions - who play Tottenham in the late kick-off - still have two games in hand.

For Hull, defeat could yet have serious implications in their fight to stay in the top flight - Phil Brown's side remain in 17th after failing to steal a march on Middlesbrough and Newcastle, who both play on Sunday.

Desire, spirit and a never-say-die attitude - not to mention the odd slice of luck - are the main survival ingredients for teams involved in a relegation dogfight.

At least Brown can console himself with the fact that his side have the first three of those things.

During a stirring first-half display, Hull not only succeeding in holding Liverpool goalless for the majority of the half, but actually enjoyed the better of the play.

Folan, recalled to the starting line-up at the expense of Angolan striker Manucho, signalled the hosts' intent after just six minutes, running in on goal before a rather leaden-footed turn let him down.

Brazilian Geovanni also looked sharp early on; his first-time half volley from the edge of the penalty area whistled just wide of Pepe Reina's post on 17 minutes in what would have been a sure-fire contender for goal of the season had it bulged the back of the net.

In between those efforts, the irrepressible Fernando Torres had seen a shot deflected just over the Hull bar, but at the other end even Nick Barmby threatened to add to his one league goal this season, the veteran nearly getting on the end of a deep cross on 38 minutes.

But for all thehome side's endeavour, Jose Reina in the Liverpool goal remained largely untroubled during the first half, and Liverpool took full advantage to nick an opener in the last minute of the opening period.

Alonso, who has become increasingly valuable to Liverpool, especially in the continued absence through injury of Steven Gerrard, was the scorer, the Spaniard firing past Boaz Myhill at the second attempt after his initial free-kick had come back to him off the wall.

Considering their efforts for the majority of the opening period, conceding at such a crucial time was harsh on Hull.

Add to that a sense of injustice that the free-kick was awarded in the first place - George Boateng was booked after the half-time whistle sounded for putting forward the case that Javier Mascherano had dived under his challenge too forcefully - and it was understandable that the hosts came out after the break a little deflated.

Liverpool sensed their chance and the dismissal of Folan - who appeared to have taken inspiration from Real Madrid defender Pepe, whose midweek dismissal in La Liga earned him a 10-match ban - played into the visitors' hands.

Soon after Hull were reduced to 10 men, Kuyt proved his poaching qualities for the first time of the day, the Dutchman diverting a Skrtel shot past Myhill with his head.

Again, Hull were left to rue their bad luck as replays showed the ball to have struck Lucas Leiva on the arm in the build-up. But referee Martin Atkinson missed it and allowed the goal to stand.

Kuyt then settled matters in the last minute with a similarly instinctive strike, this time diverting Alvaro Arbeloa's wayward shot into the back of the net.

In between Geovanni's straight-forward finish after good work by substitute Daniel Cousin had briefly given hope to Hull, but ultimately it had no bearing on the result.

Indeed, Liverpool could have increased their margin of victory further had Torres's towering header not struck the bar in the 79th minute.

Liverpool

Reina 4 - His long kicking was decent as always, but when four goals fly past you and you haven't done a great deal else except skew a couple of clearances, then it's not been your night.

Arbeloa 5.5 - Decent going forward, but was questionable at the other end on more than one occasion, letting Arshavin get the better of him and make it 2-2.

Carragher 6 - No lack of desire from Carra, but he looked shell-shocked as the pacey Gunners gave his rearguard a torrid evening.

Agger 6 - The stopper was largely dominant in the air, but otherwise he could have been far more commanding, both in individual situations and overall.

Aurelio 5 - Very nervy at times, and his wayward side-footed half-clearance led to Arsenal's third.

Alonso 5 - Wasted a couple of dangerously-positioned free-kicks and failed to provide the presence needed of him in the absence of Steven Gerrard.

Mascherano 4.5 - Was guilty of sloppy play for Arshavin's opener and his evening didn't really improve a great deal. Like Alonso, he was largely anonymous.

Benayoun 8.5 - Of all the Reds, the Israeli perhaps showed the most of the swashbuckling spirit which was required to get something out of this topsy-turvy game. Scored two goals: the first a brave and the second a 'right-place-right-time' effort.

Kuyt 7.5 - The Dutchman was perhaps removed from the action too soon, and didn't look particularly happy about it. After all, his perfect crosses had set up 'Pool's first two goals.

Riera 7 - From time to time the winger was awesome, buying himself all kinds of space and playing dangerous crosses - one of which assisted Torres for the Reds' third and another which narrowly evaded Benayoun. Perhaps could have produced more at crunch time.

Torres 8 Always portrayed a quiet confidence, and justified his attitude. 'El Nino' was a handful for an albeit dodgy Arsenal rearguard throughout, bagging a brace eventually.

Arsenal

Fabianski 4 - Started very well, making key blocks and tipping vicious drives over the bar. He capitulated somewhat, however, and one felt by the end that Arsenal might have won with Manuel Almunia between the sticks.

Sagna 5.5 - Was perhaps a bit unlucky when he picked up an early booking, but there was no excuse for his poor clearance which led to Liverpool's initial leveller.

Toure 6 - His physical presence was vital at times - Torres would have done far more damage if the Ivorian's body wasn't on the line. A few good interceptions, too, but he's missing William Gallas, of all people.

Silvestre 4.5 - Tough, tough evening for the veteran. He was in the right place at the right time for the bulk of the game, but whilst there he failed to clear his lines, causing havoc. Also a bit rash in his tackling.

Gibbs 6 - Up and down. Cleared off the line, but also gifted the hosts their second. He's nowhere near the finished article, but marginally did more good than harm in the end.

Arshavin 10 - How on earth do you sum up the performance of a man who scored four goals at Anfield in a couple of sentences. Well, you don't have to - he scored four goals. Aside from his wonderful finishes, his pace was terrifying despite the fact that he's still only 90% fit and adjusted.

Song Billong 6 - Had a good first half, but left the very defence he was supposed to be screening exposed all too often. Didn't do himself many favours as he tries to keep Diaby form the starting XI.

Fabregas 5.5 - It never really happened for Cesc at Anfield, to be honest. He was caught offside on a few occasions and gave the ball away more than he would have liked, but he did keep working hard and had a hand in the opener.

Denilson 5 - Hooked for Walcott at just the right time. This wasn't really his type of game, and in hindsight I don't think Arsene Wenger would have included such a subtle player.

Nasri 7.5 - A good all-round showing. His wonderful reverse pass created the opener, and he had a hand in the Gunners' third. Linked up well with everyone around him and was always positive.

Bendtner 7 - He'll never win over everyone, but he had a good game. Some of his passing was poor, especially during the first half, but he closed down well and had the ball in the net - a fine finish - only to be ruled offside narrowly.

Diego Maradona - The Albiceleste underdog who conquered the world

Maradona made the ball an early friend and it was his constant companion in the games of street football that taught him how to compete with older and bigger opponents. Despite this toughening process, however, Maradona's physique, or lack of it, almost cost him his career.

The Argentinos Juniors youth coach, Francis Cornejo, had no doubts about his ability - yet could not believe that the little left-footer was old enough to play for his team. His date of birth duly established, Maradona became the star of the 'Cebollitas' helping them go 136 matches unbeaten. The senior squad beckoned, and on 20 October 1976 the 15-year-old debuted for Argentinos Juniors in the first division against Talleres de Córdoba.

Another 21 seasons, another bow: the final curtain fell on Diego's career after Boca Juniors' 2-1 defeat of River Plate on 29 October 1997. In the intervening years, Barcelona, Napoli, Seville and Newell's Old Boys had all witnessed the Maradona phenomenon at first hand - a pocket battleship of a player blessed with supreme technique and a magical left foot.


Controversial from the start
It was the national team that saw the best of him, however. Thirty-four goals in 91 appearances make him the Albiceleste's second top scorer after Gabriel Batistuta. And his contribution was such that the Argentine Football Federation (AFA) recently 'retired' his old No.10 shirt. This love affair began on 3 April 1977 when Maradona first played for his country in a friendly against a local selection. Soon there were calls for coach Cesar Luis Menotti to include him in the squad for the forthcoming FIFA World Cup™ finals. Argentina would win the tournament on home soil - but without Diego whom Menotti thought too young to participate.

Amends were made the following summer when Maradona inspired his peers (not that he had many equals) to victory at the FIFA World Youth Championship in Japan. "That was the most fun I had on a football pitch," he said later. "Apart from my daughters, nothing has given me as much pleasure."

No stranger to success then, he also courted controversy. Apologists spoke of the star's "honesty" and "refusal to sell out". Critics did not want for ammunition either - after all, this was a man who once shot at journalists with an air rifle and insulted the Pope on national TV. He always roused the extremes of emotions, yet on the pitch he did as he pleased - and as no other could. "The things I could do with a football, he could do with an orange," eulogised French star Michel Platini.

Balance was the key - which was ironic given his struggle to find equilibrium elsewhere in life. It was impossible to stop 'El Grande' as he slalomed towards goal; and just as unerring was his accuracy from set pieces.

Toughness and grandeur
The 1982 FIFA World Cup™ finals did not see enough of those qualities. Argentina lost their opening game to Belgium then beat Hungary and El Salvador. Diego scored twice against the Hungarians, but was unable to repeat the dose against Italy and Brazil in the second round. In fact, he grew so frustrated with his markers that he was sent off against the latter as the holders crashed out.

Mexico 86 was another matter entirely. Maradona's five goals - one against Italy and two apiece against England and Belgium in the quarter and semi-finals - took Carlos Bilardo's side to the final, and sealed his reputation. It was as the greatest player on the planet that he lifted the FIFA World Cup after a 3-2 win over West Germany.

Four years on, he assumed a quite different role for the title defence. The tournament took place in Italy, where Maradona was nearing the end of a seven-year spell with Napoli which would yield two Serie A championships and a UEFA Cup. Though his physical powers diminished by a serious ankle injury, the skipper's will remained as strong as ever and this carried the team through against Brazil, Yugoslavia and Italy in the knockout stages. However, there was nothing he could do about Andreas Brehme's Cup-winning penalty for West Germany.

Who is the most exciting Brazilian?

Brazil has definitively produced a series of the most thrilling talents in football history. And while the question of the country's greatest-ever player has frequently been debated, FIFA.com would now like to know who is the most exciting Brazilian you have seen; be it at the stadium, on television, from video footage or internet highlights.

The modern era is awash with contenders. Who can forget Romario's excellence in his pomp, Ronaldo's spectacular performances for clubs and country, or Ronaldinho's sheer wizardry with the ball at his feet? Tele Santana's memorable cast of 1982 was also rich on individual talent, and Junior, Falcao, Socrates, Zico, Eder and Co consistently thrilled audiences. Elder users may prefer to campaign for Leonidas da Silva, Zizinho or Julinho, while others may feel that nothing surpasses the electrifying displays of Edu, Reinaldo or Renato Gaucho.

UEFA hail Chelsea-Liverpool among 10 'classics'

UEFA have included Chelsea's thrilling 4-4 Champions League quarter-final draw with Liverpool in a list of 10 classic matches to have graced the competition.


Chelsea went into Tuesday's second-leg game with a 3-1 lead from the away leg and hit back from 2-0 and 4-3 down to secure a 7-5 aggregate victory that sets up a semi-final meeting with in-form Spanish giants Barcelona.

Three more Liverpool matches feature on the UEFA list, published on their official website on Wednesday.

First up is the Reds' dramatic 4-2 victory over fellow Premier League heavyweights Arsenal at the quarter-final stage of last season's competition.

Liverpool led 2-1 with six minutes remaining and looked to be on course for the last four, before an incredible slaloming run from England winger Theo Walcott set up Emmanuel Adebayor for a goal that put Arsenal in front on the away goals rule.

With extra time beckoning, Steven Gerrard converted a penalty after substitute Ryan Babel had been brought down by Kolo Toure, with the Dutchman then firing home in added time to clinch Liverpool's progress and a 5-3 aggregate win.

But the Merseysiders succumbed to an equally sensational defeat in the quarter-finals of the 2001-02 competition, when a late goal from Brazilian defender Lucio earned German side Bayer Leverkusen a 4-2 second-leg win that took them into the last four.

Liverpool's most famous Champions League performance, however, came in the final of the 2005 competition in Istanbul.

Trailing 3-0 to Italy's AC Milan at half-time, Rafael Benitez's charges stormed back into the game in the second period, scoring three times to take the match to extra time and then clinching victory in the penalty shootout thanks to the heroics of Polish goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek.

Milan had been the victims of a similarly jaw-dropping comeback in the 2003-04 competition, which also features in UEFA's list.

Having beaten Deportivo La Coruna 4-1 in the first leg of their quarter-final tie at the San Siro, the Rossoneri travelled to Depor's Riazor stadium fully expecting to progress.

But the Spanish underdogs stunned them by racing into a 3-0 lead by half-time, with a late goal from Fran capping a remarkable and unprecedented turnaround.

Dramatic comebacks are unsurprisingly prominent on UEFA's rundown, which features Monaco's 3-1 quarter-final destruction of Real Madrid in 2004, in which a goal from Monaco's Fernando Morientes, on loan from Real, helped dump his shell-shocked employers out of the competition.

Also included on the list are Barcelona's 5-1 (6-4 aggregate) quarter-final victory over Chelsea in 2000 and Fenerbache's 3-2 spotkick win against Sevilla in last season's round of 16, after both legs had finished 3-2 to the home side.

Manchester United's memorable 1999 triumph earns them two places in the list.

Inspired by Irish midfielder Roy Keane, Alex Ferguson's men fought back from 2-0 down to beat Juventus 3-2 in Turin in the semi-finals, having scraped a 1-1 draw in the first leg at Old Trafford.

More drama was to follow in the final in Barcelona, when injury-time efforts from substitutes Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer secured a scarcely believable 2-1 triumph against Bayern Munich.

Our second half was good..the spirit was there, and credit to Chelsea. Alex's cracker was really superb. Lucas and Kuyt struck twice within the gap of 60 second. As usual, Drogba became an actor on the pitch. No need to ashame of this lost. Premier League title is still on the race. Roll on Arsenal.

Chelsea survived an almighty scare to reach the Champions League semi-finals after an amazing 4-4 draw against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

Just like the pundit says, Chelsea survived an almigthy scared...this match was an entertainment 4 me...even we lost. Time to say "GooD ByE CL !!! GooD ByE CL !!! and thanks to the REDMEN for the match, YNWA !!"

"Saya pasti Kelantan tidak akan memberi ruang buat kami, lebih-lebih lagi saingan kali ini lebih besar ertinya yang bakal menentukan pasukan mana yang berjaya melangkah ke saingan kemuncak nanti.

FIRDAUS (dua dari kanan) yang menyumbang dua gol ketika bertemu Kuala Muda Naza, Sabtu lalu, diyakini mampu menggalas tugas Zaquan sekiranya penyerang utama itu tidak dapat beraksi.

Menurutnya, penyerang utama itu tidak sihat namun ia tidak menjejaskan persiapan pasukan, sebaliknya penyerang muda Mohd Firdaus Azizul, yang menyumbang dua gol ketika mengatasi Kuala Muda Naza, Sabtu lalu, diyakini mampu menggalas tugas itu sekali pun masih dalam proses pembelajaran.

Malaysian legal body faces lawsuit for using 'Allah'

Malaysian religious authorities have threatened to sue the country's top legal body for using the word "Allah" on its website, in another row over the issue to hit the multi-ethnic country.

The Islamic religious council in central Selangor state said it would take action against the Malaysian Bar, which represents some 12,000 lawyers, for using the word as a translation for "God" in two online polls on its website.

Its comments came amid a long-running battle between the government and a Roman Catholic newspaper which has been threatened with closure for using the disputed word in its Malay-language edition.

The government has argued that the word should be used only by Muslims, who dominate the population of multicultural Malaysia.

The Malaysian Bar's polls asked lawyers to vote on whether any particular race in Malaysia had an exclusive right to use "Allah" and whether non-Muslim religious publications should be allowed to use the word.

"The issue raised in the polls can threaten the sensitivity of Muslims," the head of the religious council Mohamad Adzib Mohamad Isa said in a statement.

He said it was empowered under religious laws to lay charges against anyone misusing the word "Allah".

The Malaysian Bar said it would defend its use of the word.

"I haven't receive a (legal) notice yet, we are prepared to challenge it," its president Ragunath Kesavan told AFP.

Religion and language are sensitive issues in multiracial Malaysia, which experienced deadly race riots in 1969.

About 60 percent of the nation's 27 million people are ethnic Malay Muslims, who dominate the government.

The rest of the population includes indigenous tribes as well as ethnic Chinese and Indians -- practising Buddhism, Christianity and Hinduism, among others.

Telekom Malaysia to bid for EPL broadcast rights: report

Malaysia's state-owned Telekom Malaysia may bid for exclusive rights to show live matches in the next three English Premier League seasons, from 2010 to 2013, a report said Sunday.

The multimillion-dollar tender will open for bidding in the second quarter of this year and the country's largest telecommunications firm is considering taking part, the Edge financial weekly quoted an unnamed source as saying.

The weekly said Telekom Malaysia is likely to compete with Malaysia's dominant pay-TV operator, Astro All Asia Networks, which currently holds the Malaysian broadcast rights for 2007 to 2010 seasons, for the 2010-2013 rights.

"We hope to acquire interesting content for our triple-play platform that could help us to enrich and add value to our service offering," Telekom Malaysia vice-president Jeremy Kung told the weekly, declining further comment.

EPL matches draw a strong following among Malaysians especially top teams such as Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool.
