Liverpool considering a staggering £1 million transfer - amazing!

It’s frustrating being a Liverpool supporter right now. In the lull ahead of watching Torres win the golden boot at Euro 2008, fans are craving for world class additions to the squad. But forget about high-flying Italian defenders, slinky Spanish left-backs or even a possible move for Gabriel Heinze, Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is reportedly looking to strengthen his defense with (yawn!) Bristol City centre-back Liam Fontaine.

The Daily Mail reckons the 22-year-old, who was in the side that lost to Hull at the weekend in the Championship Play-Off Final, has caught Benitez’s eye and he’s ready to hand over an earth-shattering 1 million quid for his services.

With Daniel Agger and Jamie Carragher likely to form Liverpool’s central pairing next season, and Skrtel and Hyypiä acting as back-up, a move for Fontaine would be regarded by most fans as “one for the squad”.

Mind you, for one Liverpool player it would surely signify the end of his Anfield career.

Jack Hobbs’ time on Merseyside is obviously running out.

It’s a shame because Hobbs initially impressed in the reserves. But the lad struggled to make the move up and failed to capitalize on his chance in the first team against Reading at the end of last year coming in for Sami Hyypiä. Hobbs was subsequently loaned out to Scunthorpe Utd at the start of 2008.

With Fontaine able to play at left-back as well as midfield, and over 90 appearances clocked up for Bristol City, the versatile defender would surely mean the end of Hobbs’ anfield career.

Still, with fans crying out for more quality á la Torres, especially up front, at left-back and at right-wing, it’s time Benitez got his cheque-book out and bought some quality for the squad!
