ANOTHER team with the Naza brand attached to it grabbed the lion’s share of the limelight on Sunday, 24 hours after Kuala Muda Naza lifted the Premier League title in style.

As if it was pre-ordained as a tribute to Naza founder Tan Sri SM Nasimuddin SM Amin who passed away in California due to lung cancer on Thursday, Negri Sembilan Naza made sure of the runners-up spot behind league champions Kedah after humbling Selangor Sunday.

Without a doubt, Naza’s involvement in football has contributed greatly to NS Naza and Kuala Muda Naza’s creditable outing this season.

If Farderin Kadir was named Man of the Match in Kuala Muda Naza’s 3-2 win over closest rivals KL Plus on Saturday, it was the turn of his former national Under-20 team mate, Mohd Zaquan Adha Abdul Radzak, to turn on the style at Shah Alam Stadium.

His double enabled NS Naza to humble the Red Giants with a scoreline of 3-0, thus guaranteeing Wan Jamak Wan Hassan’s boys the runners-up spot, ahead of Johor FC. The other goal was scored by Udo Fortune.

It turned out to be a disappointing end to the league outing for the Red Giants. The defeat allowed Johor FC to leapfrog over them to third place.

Wan Jamak was satisfied with the runners-up spot, having had to utilise less heralded players in his first season with the former Super League champions.

“I took up the challenge by throwing youngsters into the fray and I am glad it has paid dividends.

“Now we look forward to a successful Malaysia Cup campaign,” said the former national team supremo.

Kedah wrapped up the title long ago and have 56 points from 24 matches to show, while NS Naza eight points adrift. Johor FC are third with 46 points, followed by Selangor at 45 points.

Johor FC travelled to Terengganu realising only a win would put them ahead of Selangor in the event the latter failed to beat NS Naza.

Just like Zaquan, Walter Silva was the undoubted hero, striking twice for the Scorpions. The Turtles replied through Zairo Anuar Zalani.

Runaway league leaders Kedah were not under pressure to perform as Philemon Chipeta struck the solitary goal for Perlis.

Perak’s disappointing league season ended with a defeat to Brunei DPMM FC in Bandar Seri Begawan, while Police beat Sarawak in a battle between two teams under the microscope for the wrong reasons of late.

Pahang played to a scoreless draw with Penang in Kuantan.
